How To Wind A Yo-Yo

Now with the new Yo-Yo's out today, many of them come with ball bands and let me show you real quick what that looks like. When you open your yo-yo, they come apart like that and you have a ball band inside. It actually spins right around when you flick it. And this is what the string actually goes around. So when you put your string on like I showed you in the last segment, it actually goes right around the band like so. So when you are playing with a yo-yo, it is actually spinning around the band itself which creates less friction and allows them to spin as long as they are spinning. So we will put these back together. What happens is you will notice when you are playing with it and trying to wind it back up, because there is a ball bearing here, when you move this it is not grabbing onto anything. It just continues to move around. What you need to do is actually put one finger into the gap, go around that finger once, come underneath it and skip it. Do this two, sometimes three times. My yo-yo is a little wider so it needs to be a little more. You drop that loop in there and just slightly finish rolling it up and you may think that knot will stop the yo-yo when it is coming out. When you throw it, it will start spinning right away and it will go straight and that is how to wind the yo-yo.

Yo-Yo String

There's actually many different kinds of yo-yo strings. There's mixtures of cotton yo-yo string, mixtures of cotton with polyester, as well as just complete polyester strings. They've even made strings out of all sorts of crazy stuff like nylon. A basic yo-yo string is actually 2 strands of strong twisted together. There's actually 2 strands. When you want to put a yo-yo string on, you actually just take your 2 fingers and untwist the string like so. You'll see the 2 stands will separate. If you open that up like that you can make a loop. What you do with this loop is you open it, hold it with your hands, you take your yo-yo, and this fits around one half of the yo-yo gap just like so. Pull the yo-yo to the side, grab the string, and then you just let it twist right back onto the yo-yo. Your yo-yo is all set to be played with at that point. The next thing you need to know is how to make a slipknot. A yo-yo string has a knot at the top. It looks just like that. It's not going to adjust to your finger like that. What you need to do is take the loop, you put it over the string like so, and you pull that string through the loop. Now it's adjustable and it'll hold on to your finger like so. Then you also want to adjust the string length. You usually want it from your belly button to the ground. This is string is all set for me because it's just about my height. If I was a little shorter, I'd hold it where my belly button was. Tie a regular old knot and cut off the excess. That's the basic of yo-yo string.

Basic Styles Of Yo-Yo Play

When you go to a yo-yo contest, you're going to see 5 different styles of yo-yoing. The first style if called single A, or 1A as you'll see it abbreviated at the contest. The whole idea with 1A is a sleeping yo-yo, so it spins at the end of the string. With that you can actually land it into the groove of the string and do some pretty fancy tricks that we're actually going to be teaching you how to do as we progress through these segments. The next style of yo-yoing is called double A. It requires 2 imperial® shaped yo-yos as we talked about before. These are looping yo-yos. A loop is something like this. It comes in and shoots right back out. Double A refers to 2 yo-yos. When you see people at a contest, they'll actually be doing this with 2 hands. The next style of yo-yoing is called Triple A. This requires 2 sleeping yo-yos. With 2 sleeping yo-yos you're actually doing string tricks with both hands. It looks something like this. You get one yo-yo sleeping first. Then you get your other yo-yo sleeping. Then you bring them up like so. I'm going to manipulate them both on my string at the same time. The next style of yo-yoing is called 4A or off-string. This is actually played with the yo-yo we were talking about before made for off-string, so it's a little more durable. It actually comes off the string. This is isn't connected right now. You can actually whip it onto the strong and then recall it back. That's off-string yo-yoing. The last style of yo-yoing is called 5A, which is also known as free hand or counter weight. It actually has a counter weight attached to the end of it. You do sleeping tricks just like you were on single A, but it's actually not attached. With that, you can manipulate both the yo-yo and the dice. You can do some pretty cool looking tricks. When you go to a contest those are the 5 main styles; 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A.
