Here is the first in a small series of two pairings involving VsNewton YoYo Concepts and Birrificio Bi-Du. Sky Walker and ArtigianAle (just Art for friends). Just scroll down for the english version.


Il Bi-Du è un piccolo birrificio originariamente basato a Rodero, a pochi metri dal confine italo-svizzero, recentemente trasferitosi ad Olgiate Comasco (rinunciando alla sua iniziale vocazione di brewpup).

Personalmente ritengo Beppe Vento, il birraio, come uno dei principali responsabili dell'affermazione di birre di scuola inglese/americana nel nostro paese proprio grazie all'ArtigianAle. Magari è una deformazione dovuta alla mia percezione soggettiva, ma prima delle numerose affermazioni dell'Art in varie competizione e manifestazioni, se volevo bere italiano, la scelta nei vari beer shop e pub era generlamente limitata a reinterpretazioni di stili belgi e tedeschi. Volendo bere italiano e amaro, la scelta era limitata alla Tipopils del Birrificio Italiano e pochissimo altro. Ora le cose, per fortuna mia, sono decisamente cambiate (forse anche troppo).
Beppe è stato uno dei primi, insieme a Mike Murphy, americano trapiantato a Roma (almeno per un certo periodo), a sperimentare luppoli americani nelle sue birre. Una sperimentazione, proseguita poi con altre birre, che ha portato, negli anni, a identificare nell'uso creativo del luppolo la firma del Bi-Du. Per quel poco che vale la mia opinione, pochi usano il luppolo con il suo gusto ed originalità. In particolare trovo notevole l'abilità di Beppe nel combinare luppoli in modo tale da esaltare caratteristiche aromatiche normalmente in secondo piano.
La Art, seconda nata del birrificio, ma prima in stile inglese, non fa eccezione. Il Cascade viene ampiamente usato, ma ingentilito dal matrimonio con altri luppoli europei, in modo da renderlo meno spigoloso. Diffilmente inseribile in uno stile classico, viene descritta dal suo creatore come un mix tra una bitter (per l'amaro) ed una strong (per il grado alcolico) Ale.
Colore ambrato molto carico, con riflessi rubino, schiuma fine e persistente, leggermente velata
Al naso presenta in un intenso aroma floreale e fruttato (pesca e pompelmo) con un finale resinoso. Avvertibile una delicata nota alcolica.
In bocca i sentori maltati (toffe e caramello) vengono immediatamente bilanciati da aromi di agrumi, spezie, resine. Grado alcolico ben bilanciato dal buon corpo della birra. Finale secco dei luppoli, con amaro deciso e persistente.


Lo Sky Walker (mi raccomando lo spazio) è stato il primo prodotto di uno dei produttori più cool del momento: VsNewton, di cui rimane, senza ombra di dubbio, l'oggetto più desiderato, con quotazioni sul mercato dell'usato, raggiunte da pochi player così recenti (forse solo il Peak è altrettanto ricercato).
Nato come produttore no-profit, il successo sta rapidamente trasformando VsNewton in un fenomeno all'interno del nostro piccolo mondo. Release che, puntualmente esauriscono in pochissimo tempo e bagarini che ne approfittano immediatamente sui mercatini, hanno, però, il loro rovescio della medaglia. Heath, il titolare, ha annunciato che sta seriamente considerando di seguire la via tracciata da CLYW, aumentando i prezzi in maniera sensibile, una inversione a U rispetto al desiderio iniziale di dare alla community ottimi prodotti a prezzi contenuti.
Lo Sky Walker è caratterizzato da uno shape a V con i rim in evidenza tipici dello shape ad H, che, personalmente, ritengo molto confortevole. L'anodizzazione è stata realizzata dalla collaudata Gruntbull per entrambe le run, per cui aspettatevi lo stesso feeling che avete imparato ad associare ai CLYW.
Il sistema di risposta è affidato a del classico silicone, ma è possibile montare alcuni dei pad più diffusi, se proprio non si può fare a meno di rovinare un ottimo yoyo.
Il cuscinetto era un dieci sfere della OD per la prima run, mentre la seconda monta un più anonimo otto sfere.
Ad un primo lancio entrambi gli esemplari in mio possesso, un prima run World Edition (acid wash nero con splash azzurri) e uno Yoda seconda run (acid wash verde con splash marroni) presentano una piccola vibrazione alla prova dell'unghia, mentre risultano perfettamente smooth alla corda. Nulla che infici il gioco, sia chiaro, ma che mi darebbe fastidio sperimentare in una eventuale prossima produzione "riposizionata".
La distribuzione dei pesi è decisamente spinta, e, dati i miei limiti, richiede un KK per apprezzare appieno le doti di estrema stabilità dello yoyo. Una volta lanciato non può che venire in mente il detto Nomen Omen. Arriva in fondo al cordino con una dolcezza e leggerezza invidiabili, complice anche il gap in controtendenza (4 mm), per poi muoversi con agile e veloce, seguendo docilmente i desideri dello yoer di turno. Più che adeguati i tempi di spin, addirittura sorprendenti se paragonati al peso percepito sulla corda, da vero peso piuma.
Tra i progetti "di debutto" che ho avuto modo di provare, sicuramente uno dei più riusciti in senso generale ed il mio preferito in assoluto, un mix perfetto di tutto quello che mi fa amare un yoyo: leggerezza, stabilità, piacevolezza "fisica". Singolare ed encomiabile, almeno dal mio punto di vista, la decisione di Heath di non flooddare il mercato nonostante l'alta domanda. Questa, infatti, doveva essere l'ultima run, e tale rimarrà per, si spera, molto tempo. Dopo varie richieste, Heath ha annunciato che la terza ed ultima run celebrerà la cessazione delle attività di VsNewton.

Perché li ho abbinati. Molto banalmente sono due prodotti con cui è partita l'avventura di due dei mie produttori preferiti che fanno dell'equilibrio e del bilanciamento tra i vari "ingredienti", la loro caratteristica fondamentale. Inoltre si prestano a fare da base ad un futuro, successivo delirio...


Bi-Du is a small craft brewery originally based in Rodero (as a Brewpub), literally a stone's throw away from the italian/swiss border, that recently relocated in Olgiate Comasco (not very far from Como, Varese, Milan and Malpensa Airport) in order to increase production (but loosing the pub part, sadly).
Personally, I consider Beppe Vento, the brewer, one the most influencial people in moving my fellow countrymen's taste toward bitter beers, and that thanks to ArtigianAle. Maybe this impression is based solely on my personal perspective, but, before Art's many achievements at various competions, fairs and so on, if I wanted to drink italian, the choice was mainly limited to reinterpretation of belgian and german styles. If I wanted an italian bitter beer my choice was down to Birrificio Italiano Tipopils and not much else. Now things have changed...maybe a bit too much...
Beppe was one the very first, along with Philadelfia born Mike Murphy in his tenure at Rome's Brewing Company, to experiment with american hops in Italy. What stands out to me is Beppe uncanny ability to combine hops in order to exalt flavours that aren't usually in the forefront.
ArtigianAle, Bi-Du's second outing, but first in a british style, is no exception. Cascade is largely used, but gentled by the marriage with a few european hops. It is described by its maker as a cross beteen a bitter and a strong ale, but, in my opinion, its bitterness can rival a few IPA I tasted.
It pours a deep amber, with ruby red refelexes, with just a hint of hazyness. Rocky head.
Aroma is floreal and fruity (peach and grapefruit) with a piney finish. Light alcohol note.
Toffe and caramel flavours are immediately balanced by citrus fruits, spice and resins. Medium body that balaces alcohol perception. Dry finish.

The Sky Walker was the first yoyo from one of the coolest manufacturers of the moment: VsNewton, and to date is still the most desiderable and sought after of their yoyos, with prices on BSTs rarely seen for a yoyo this recent.

Born as a non-profit company, its own success is turning vsNewton in true phenomenon in our little world. Runs that regularly sell out in a matter of minutes, scalpers immediately taking advantage on BSTs are slowly convincing Heath, the owner, that a raise in princing might be inevitable, an U turn from his initial desire to bring to the community high end yoyos at an affordable price.
The Sky Walker sports a V-shape, with rims reminiscent of an H-shape, that I find very comfortable. Gruntbull took care of annodization, so you can expect the same level of awesomeness that you usually associate with CLYW.
Silicone is the stock response, but the grooves can accept some of most common pads, if you really feel the need to ruin a wonderful yoyo.
Bearing was an OD 10ball on the first run and a more anonymous 8 ball on the second.
Both my Sky Walkers, a first run World Edition and a Yoda second run, have a vibe on the finger but not on the string. Nothing that affects play, but it would disturb me in a future, higher priced, VsNewton run.
Weight placement is quite extreme, and given my limits, I need a KK to fully appreciate the extreme stability of the yoyo. Once thrown the latin saying Nomen Omen comes to mind. It lightly and sweetly hits the bottom of the string courtesy of its 4 mm gap, and then moves swiftly and agilely, faithfully following the lucky owner every whim and desire. Spin times are adequate, even surprising if compared to the perceived weight on the string (light as a feather).
Among debut projects that I was able to throw, I believe the Sky Walker is on of the best from an objective standpoint and my favourite one as far as I'm concerned, a perfect mix of everything I love in a yoyo.
Unique and, from my point of view, commendable, Heath decision not to flood the market, in spite of the high request. This was originally supposed to be the last run but it will be the last chance to get one for, I hope, a long time, since Heath decided that the third and final run will celebrate VsNewton last yoyo run.

Why a paired them. Both products are starting points for the adventure of two of my favourite manufacturers and both make of balance and equilibrium their defining trait. Whatsmore I can start from here from my next flight of fancy...

Capire cosa abbinare a questa birra non è stato facile. A differenza della Baird, che mi dava dei riferimenti precisi grazie ad un etichetta bilingue inglese/giapponese, per la XH il buio era quasi totale.
Tutto lasciava preagire di trovarsi di fronte ad una birra importante, a partire dal nome stesso, XH, infatti, sta per Extra High, qui riferito alla quantità extra di luppoli e malti in essa contenuti.
Sapevo di essere di fronte ad una famigerata doppio malto, definizione legislativa tutta italiana che vuol dire tutto ed il suo contrario: ci ricadono, ad esempio, le doppelbock, stile tedesco con sentori maltati in primo piano e le amarissime Double Ipa. A parte questo, però, il vuoto. Per cui, contrariamente alla mi abitudine ho dovuto documentarmi preventivamente, a costo di farmi influenzaree crearmki dei preconcetti.
Hitachino Nest è un marchio della Kiuchy Brewery, storico (oltre 180 anni di attività) produttore di Sake, il tipico "vino di riso" giapponese, che dal '96 ha aggiunto la birra alla sua gamma di prodotti. La XH sposa questi due mondi, infatti si tratta di una ale brassata vagamente in stile belga (Brune), invecchiata in legno, più precisamente in botti che hanno contenuto Shouchu, ovvero un distillato di Sake, nel nostro caso (ma in altre aree del Giappone può essere prodotto partendo da altre materie prime).
Colore ambrato molto carico con riflessi rubino. Lieviti in sospensione. Schiuma fine, scarsa, poco persistente che lascia, però, abbondanti merletti.
Al naso presenta frutta secca, in particolare fichi e frutta matura (uva, amarena, prugna), toffe/caramello, biscotto, poi subentra il sake che dona all'insieme un carattere molto vinoso. L'etilico è presente, ma molto discreto.
In bocca il malto domina, con il caramello, e la frutta matura a farla da padrone seguita dalla frutta secca con un finale secco, delicatamente speziato in cui diventa riconoscibile il sake. Distintamente percebile il calore dell'alcol, corpo buono ma non eccessivo. Amaro non eccessivo, ma persistente e adeguato a corpo e grado alcolico.


Finding a yoyo to go along with this ale wasn't easy. While the Baird gave me precise info on its style, thanks to a bilingual label, with the XH I was in the dark.
Everything hinted at a robust beer, starting from the name itself, XH, in fact, stands for extra high, with reference to the quantity of malts and hops used in its making. Aside from that, nothing else. So, in spite of my normal approach to a new a beer, I had to look for info on the internet, at the risk of building some preconcepts on it.
Hitachino Nest is a brand belonging to Kiuchi Brewery, an historical (more than 180 years old) Sake maker that, in 1996 added beer to its range of products.
XH marries this worlds, being a brune inspired ale, but aged in Shouchu barrels, with Kiuchi Shoucu distilled from sake (while in other parts of Japan it can be made from other products).
It pours a very dark amber, with ruby reflexes. Yeast speckles can be spotted. Head retreats fast, but leaves some nice laces.
Aroma gives you fruit, both dried, figs in particular, and ripe (plum, cherry, grapes), toffe/caramel, biscuit and, finally, sake. All in all, a very winelike aroma. Alchol is present, but discretely.
Taste returns the same malty charachter, with caramel and ripe fruit in the forefront immediately followed by dired fruits and a dry, sakeiish and ligthly spiced finale. Nice body, but lean, compared to my expectations (ah, preconcepts!).



Nota curiosa. Mentre cercavo informazioni, non potevo non notare come molti rilevassero una caratteristica nota acida, decisamente compatibile con l'invecchiamento in legno. Nota che era totalmente assente dalla bottiglia da me provata.


A curiosity. While looking for info, I couldn't but notice that many fellow beer lovers described this ale as tart and sour, something that can be expected from wood aged beers, but totally absent from my bottle.


Il Third Impact è il signature di Kengo Kido, propietario della YYR e, nelle intenzioni, dovrebbe rappresentare la terza evoluzione del design YYR. Uso il condizionale per il semplice motivo che, al momento, il terzo step è rimasto un esclusiva del Third Impact (e del contemporaneo Maxbet della Turning Point, nonché dei "figli" di quest'ultimo). Il motivo mi sfugge, troppo diverso dagli altri YYR per capire i benefici del progetto.
Aprendo l'elegante scatoletta, il Third Impact si presenta nella sua essenzialità ed eleganza. Trattandosi di un proto, infatti, è rigorosamente raw e privo di alcuna micropallinatura, come da tradizione YYR. Il cuscinetto, misura C, è un KK che fa il suo dovere.
Il bimbo pesa la bellezza di 72 grammi, a fronte di 59.5 mm di diametro e 44 mm di larghezza. Per darvi un'idea, il Dreadnought pesa 4.5 grammi in meno, a fronte di un diametro superiore di ben 6 mm. Motivo per cui, quando mi sono deciso a prenderlo (thanks Persson, by the way), ero piuttosto intimidito da questa bestiolina, temendo di portarmi a casa un mattoncino ingiocabile.
E i 72 grammi, al lancio si sentono tutti. Ma, una volta lanciato, invece, sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dalle doti del piccolo. Gira per giorni, ma questo era in un certo modo prevedibile. Quello che era meno prevedibile è che, pur essendo decisamente solido (e vorrei vedere), non è assolutamente una legna in corda, anzi! Al gioco vanta la solità terrificante stabilità degli YYR, che perdona moltissimo sul gioco sporco (alla faccia delle Formula 1) unita ad una estrema agilità nei cambi di direzione e nel muoversi tra le corde.
Il sistema di risposta è il solito pad siliconico YYR, senza infamia e senza lode, a giudizio mio. Si comporta bene, specie dopo un breve rodaggio, ma lo trovo nettamente inferiore al motorsil, visto che, a differenza dello yoyo non perdona più di tanto la mancanza di pulizia nei passaggi in controrotazione.


The Third Impact is Kengo Kido's signature, and it should have represented the third evolution of YYR's design. I said should because, as of now, this design has been exclusive to the Third Impact (and to the contemporanous Turning Point Maxbet and its "sons"). The reason eludes me, this yoyo plays way too different from its kin to fully understand the benefits of this design.
The Third Impact is essential and elegant. Being a prototype it is raw and unbeadblasted, as per YYR tradition. The bearing is a C sized KK that performs as it should.
This baby weighs a full 72 grams with a diameter of 59.5 mm and a width of 44 mm. To give you an idea, the Dreadnough weighs 4.5 grams less, but with a diameter 6 mm bigger than the Third Impact. Thas why, when I decided to buy it (thanks to Persson) I was a bit intimidated by this little beast and I feared that I was bringing home something completely unplayable.
When throwing it, those 72 grams are definitely there, but, once thrown, I was pleasantly surprised by this baby endowements. It spins for days, but was to be expected. What I did non foresaw is that, while still being somewhat solid, it's not a brick on the string, quite the opposite. To the point that someone might even describe it as floaty.
The uncanny YYR stability is there too, making it a very forgiving throw while playing and is paired to a nice agility in direction changes and between the strings.
YYR Silicone pads are nice enough, especially after a good break-in, but I still find them well inferior to our beloved Motorsil.


Perchè li ho abbinati. I due prodotti, oltre a condividere la medesima provenienza geografica, condividono anche una notevole complessità, sono prodotti da meditazione (più la HG che il Third Impact), non necessariamente adatti a tutti i palati, ma le cui doti sono riconoscibili da chiunque. Inoltre nessuno dei due è esattamente facile da trovare


Why I paired them. The two products share the same geographic origin, and they also share a good deal of complexity, they're "meditation" products (more the HG than the yoyo), maybe not suitable for everyone, but whose merits are easily recognizable by everyone. Whatsmore neither of the two is easy to come by.

Summer pairing on the fly. Bad Attitude Hobo and Leviathan Shinji Saito Edition


Durante il mese di agosto mi ero preprato ad una pesante astinenza birraria, visto che i luoghi scelti per la villeggiatura li sapevo pressoché privi di ogni attrattiva in tal senso, dopo la chiusura del Piccolo Birrificio di Apricale. Invece, con mia grande sorpresa ho scoperto che quello che era un pub sui generis (classico posto da Tennent's e, se sei fortunato, da Guinness), cambiata la gestione, aveva cominciato a servire birra e non sciacquatura per piatti. Qui ho trovato, tra le altre, la Hobo, birra prodotta da un birrificio elvetico (Canton Ticino), Bad Attitude, a me sconosciuto nonstante sia situato molto vicino alla mia città natale.


This last august, I was expecting a long abstinence from lagers and ale alike, since the places I chose for my vacation were absolutely deprived of any "malty" attractive. But what used to be a very unattractive pub turned out as a mine worth exploring after a property change. Here, among others, I found the Hobo, an ale manufactured by a Swiss craft brewery, Bad Attitude, that I knew nothing about, in spite of the fact that it is based quite close to my hometown.


La Hobo è, tanto per cambiare, una IPA (non ci posso fare nulla, mi piace il luppolo), ma leggermente fuori stile, visto che prevede ampio uso di segale (un incubo da lavorare) e caratterizzata dall'uso di luppoli americani (Amarillo) e neozelandesi (Nelson Sauvin). Quest'ultimo, ho scoperto in seguito, è usato in modo diverso rispetto alle altre birre che ne fanno uso e che conosco, e questo spiega la totale assenza dei sentori di uvaspina, cosa che mi aveva lasciato perplesso al primo sorso.
Alla vista si presenta con un colore ambrato scuro, schiuma fine e persistente, lievemente velata.
Al naso presenta sentori resinoso/balsamici, pompelmo e frutti acerbi. Chiude un delicato sentore floreale.
In bocca abbiamo un delicato caramello, una nocciola appena accennata, per poi ritrovare gli agrumi ed il balsamico che avevamo sperimentato al naso. L'amaro è moderato, ma ben persistente, il corpo leggero. Finale secco.


For a change, the Hobo is a IPA (what can I do about that? I'm a hophead), but a little out of style, since it makes large use of rye (a real pain to work with). The Hops are Amarillo from US and Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand. Later on I discovered that this last hop addiction are scheduled in a slightly different way than ohter Nelson Sauvin featuring beers that I'm familiar with, and that explains the lack of gooseberry flavor and aroma that surpised me at the first sip.
Appearance: dark amber color, rocky head, slightly hazy.
Aroma: resninous/balsamic, grapefruit and unripe fruit, delicate flowery finale.
Flavour: faint caramel and hazelnut, citrus fruits and balsamic. Bitternes is present, but not overwhelming, light body and dry finale.


Note finali. Una delle migliori etichette mai viste. Non solo bella graficamente, ma anche con tutte le informazioni (OG, IBU, ingredienti etc) che servono ad un fanatico birrario. Ultima cosa. Tornato a casa, insieme ad altre cose, ho scoperto che dietro Bad Attitude c'è il Subcomandate Marcos, ex titolare del Piccolo Birrificio di Apricale che ho nominato all'inizio.


Il Turning Point Leviathan I è uno dei primi, se non il primo, yo-yo disegnato dal dio del 3A, kentaro Kimura.
Lo shape è un butterfly molto particolare, confortevole da tenere in mano, che anticipa il design delle sue produzioni più recenti. Come sistema di risposta, sono presenti dei K-pad slim che però, complice il gappone, non disturbano più di tanto anche un fanatico del Motorsil come me.
Largo,ma non larghissimo, per gli stantadrd odierni, gioca in maniera molto equilibrata, risultando un felicissimo compromesso tra velocità e feeling sulla corda. Anche per dimensioni si pone a cavallo tra un undersize ed un full size, in grado, pertanto, di rispondere alle preferenze di un gran numero di yoer. Quello che più mi ha stupito, però, sono i tempi di spin, a livelli assurdi. Posso affermare che si tratta di uno degli yoyo che girano di più tra quelli della mia collezione, potendosi facilmente confrontare con payer in titanio (ed il Leviathan II fa ancora meglio, al prezzo di una maggior pesantezza sulla corda). La stabilità è, come prevedibile, ai massimi livelli, tanto che, giocandolo ad occhi chiusi, potrebbe tranquillamente passare per un H-Shape. Unico difetto: una leggera vibrazione alla prova dell'unghia. Nulla di grave, il gioco non ne risente, ma da una serie numerata e limitata mi aspetto la perfezione.


Turning Point Leviathan I was the first (I believe) yo-yo designed by 3A's God, Kentaro Kimura.
The shape is a peculiar butterfly, very comfortable in the hand that prefigures the design of his later throws. K-pads slim are featured as response system and thanks to the wide gap, they don't disturb that much even a Motorsil fanatic like me.
Wide but not overwide as many throws so popular these days, it's a very balanced yo-yo, an happy compromise between speed and feeling on the string. Specs are just on the border between full size and undersize, satisfying the preferences of the majority of players.
What's really astonishing of this yo-yo is spin time: in this regard, the Leviathan I is one of the best y-yos in my collection, since it can easily compete with a Ti yo-yo (and the Leviathan II is even better, at the price of being a little heavier on the string).
Stability, as it may be expected, is top notch, and gives the illusion of throwing an H-shaped yo-yo.
Only flaw: a slight vibe on the finger. Nothing serious, play isn't affected, but from a limited and numbered edition I expect nothing but perfection.


Perché li ho abbinati. Facile: non avevo molta scelta. Quello avevo alla cintura quando ho trovato la Hobo.


Why I paired them. Easy: I had no choice. That I had at my belt when I found the Hobo.

This the first pairing for my friend Mojo: the Yoyo's Holy Grail, the Sleipnir and one of Toccalmatto's instant classics, Zona Cesarini, simply Zona for the fans.



La Zona Cesarini è una PIPA, ovvero una Pacific India Pale Ale. Il termine di India Pale Ale (IPA) nasce nel 1835 in terra di Albione, ma birre con simili caratterstiche erano nate ben prima, dall'esigenza dei birrai britannici di esportare la birra nei territori del loro vasto Impero. Dovendo affrontare lunghi viaggi in nave, la birra veniva abbondantemente luppolata, con aggiunte anche a freddo nei cask (pratica nota come dry hopping) per sfruttare le caratteristiche di conservante naturale tipiche del luppolo. Il prefisso Pacific della Zona deriva dal fatto che i luppoli usati sono originari del Giappone (Sorachi) e Nuova Zelanda (Pacific Gem), più altre varietà esotiche, usate in minor quantità, su cui viene mantenuto il più stretto segreto. Il riferimento al mitico calciatore della Juventus e della Nazionale Renato Cesarini, noto per le sue segnature all'ultimo minuto, è dovuto al fatto che la maggior parte del luppolo viene aggiunta durante le fasi finali della lavorazione (ultimi minuti bollitura e dry hopping), in modo da avere la massima resa da parte delle resine aromatiche del luppolo (altrimenti danneggiate dal calore della bollitura).
Alla vista di presenta con un cappuccio di schiuma fine, abbondante e persistente che, ritirandosi, lascia numerosi merletti sul bicchiere. Colore aranciato con riflessi ramati, lievemente velata.
Il naso, molto elegante ed intenso, è caratterizato dai luppoli utilizzati. Pompelmo, ananas, mango, mandarino, un'elegante speziatura con un finale delicatamente floreale ed erbaceo.
L'esame gustativo ci restituisce gli stessi aromi riscontrati al naso, con l'aggiunta di una anoressica nota maltata. L'amaro è deciso e leggermente balasmico/resinoso, ma non invadente. Finale secco con amaro persistente.



The Zona Cesarini is a PIPA, Pacific India Pale Ale. The prefix Pacific comes from the hops featured in this ale: Sorachi from Japan and Pacific Jam from New Zealand with other exotic varieties whose identity is undisclosed to the public. The beer is named after legendary football (soccer for those on the other side of the pond) player Renato Cesarini, who was famous for his "buzzer beaters", so famous, in fact, that, in Italy, the last minutes of a match have been known as Zona Cesarini (Cesarini's time) ever since. In a similar way the majority of the hops are added in the final minutes of the mash, including addition as late as whirpooling and, of course dry hopping right afer the primary fermentation.
Appeareance: Fine grained head with a medium persitence that keaves lots of laces. Orange color with copper reflexes, a little hazy.
Aroma. Very elegant and intese. Featured hops are clearly recognizable: Grapefriut, ananas, mango, mandarin, a nice spicy note with a delicate herbal and floreal finale.
Flavour. Same as aroma with the addiction of an anorexic malty note. Bitterness is decise, with a balsamic/piney carachter, and presistent. Dry finale.



Il prezzo elevato, i pareri entusiasti di chi ha la fortuna di averne uno e la distribuzione limitata al solo mercato domestico giapponese hanno contribuito a creare un'aura mistica intorno alla YoYoRecreation, casa nipponica di Kengo Kido. E, tra tutti i prodotti della YYR, lo Sleipnir è quello più elusivo e più ricercato, con la fama di yoyo definitivo. Beh, sfatiamo un mito. A mio avviso non è il miglior Recreation, per il semplice motivo che ogni loro prodotto (con la possibile eccezione del Clashcube) é pensato e progettato con l'obbiettivo di essere il miglior yoyo possibile nella sua categoria. A differenza di molti produttori, non si parte da uno shape che viene poi reso giocabile attraverso aggiustamenti del peso, ma ogni grammo è piazzato sui Recreation con uno scopo bene preciso, funzionale al prodotto che si vuole ottenere. Certo, gli yoyo della YYR si assomigliano tutti. Alla vista. Perché al gioco hanno tutti una loro personalità, pur mantenendo un'impronta di fondo, la firma della casa: sostanza sopra apparenza.
Lo Sleipnir è il signature del fratello di Kengo, Shinya, e ritengo debba la sua maggior popolarità rispetto ad altri modelli della casa, al fatto che, per dimensioni e caratteristiche, è quello che più si avvicina ai gusti della maggioranza dei giocatori.
E' disegnato per il palco, per cui niente micropallinatura e nemmeno un labbro per i thumb grind: chi li fa più in un freestyle? La stabilità è fuori dal comune, una volta lanciato farlo piegare anche con un gioco sporchissimo come il mio è cosa quasi impossibile. Sopporta le controrotazioni senza battere ciglio, e i tempi di spin sono quasi a livello di un titanio.
Si muove con agilità attraverso qualsiasi trick possiate immaginare, assecondando qualsiasi cambio di direzione con protezza e rapidità. In definitiva uno yoyo degno del suo nome, ovvero quello del cavallo di Odino, leggendario per la sua velocità e agilità.



The premium price, the enthusiastic opinions of the lucky owners, the availability in the japanese domestic market only, have contributed building a mystic aura around Kengo Kido's YoYoRecreation. And among all of his offerings, Sleipnir is the most elusive and sought after, with the reputation of being the perfect yoyo. Well, let's kill this myth. In my opinion this is not the best yoyo YYR has to offer, for the simple reason that each and every yoyo Kengo made (with the possible exception of the Clashcube) is being designed with the objective of being the best yoyo in his category. Unlike other cases, where shape comes first and the weight is moved around to make it work, here you have the feeling that every gram is placed where it should be from the very beginning in reason of the desired outcome. Yes, all YYRs look alike, but the don't play alike in the least. Each has its own personality.
The Sleipnir is the singature of Kengo's brother, Shinya and I think it owes its popularity to the fact the its specs are closer to preferences of the majority of players.
It is designed with competition in mind, so no beadblasting and no lip for thumb grinds (who does that anymore in a freestyle?). Stability is on a different planet and once thrown is almost impossible to make it tilt, even with a technique as poor as mine. Counter rotations does not scare it in the least and spinning times are almost on par with Ti yoyos.
It can whitstand every trick you might think to throw at it, following your every command with speed and agility. In the end a yoyo that stays true ti its namesake, Odin's mount, renowed for its speed and agility.



Perché li ho abbinati. Beh, questa volta non ci sono motivi particolari, oltre al fatto che si tratta di due ottimi prodotti, uno originario del paese del Sol Levante, uno molto caratterizzato da prodotti di quell'area geografica. Lo Sleipnir è probabilmente la scelta ottimale per avvicinarsi ai prodotti della YYR, mentre la Zona Cesarini è una delle birre che raccomando a chi si voglia avvicinare alle birre amare.



Why I paired them. Well, this time no particular reason other than the fact that both are extraordinary products, one that originates from the land of rising sun, the other with a strong inspiration drawn from that very same land. Sleipnir is probably the best choice to start exploring YYR's world, while Zona Cesarini is one the ales I recommend to someone interested in exploring the world of bitter beers/ales.

Più che un abbinamento, questa è una seduta di terapia per me, una sorta di outing, per affrontare una cosa di cui dovrei vergognarmi. A questo giro vi parlo della Glückauf Radler e dello Yoyofactory Starlite



More than a pairing, this a therapy session for me, sort of an outing, in order to face something that I should be ashamed of. This time I'm going to cover Glückauf Radler and Yoyofactory Starlite



Quello di cui devo vergognarmi è la mia passione per la Glückauf Radler, ovviamente.
La Radler è una bevanda ottenuta miscelando birra (helles, pils etc) e limonata in parti uguali. Nasce nel 1922, quando circa 13.000 ciclisti visitarono la taverna di Franz Xaver Kugler, il quale, vedendo le sue scorte di birra calare ad una velocità impressionante, decise di miscelare i due ingredienti. Col tempo è diventata un cocktail molto popolare in terra teutonica, viste le sue incredibili proprietà rinfrescanti. Può essere preparata anche con la gazzosa, ma risulta più dolce e meno beverina, per quel che mi riguarda.
Come per tutte le droghe, l'approccio è stato subdolo. Vista la mia passione per le birre artigianali, ero a dir poco prevenuto verso un mix composto da una pils, per quanto buona e una bibita al limone. L'idea di assaggiarla non mi sfiorava minimamente. Motivo per cui la prima dose mi è stata regalata dal subdolo pusher, ben conscio della dipendenza che mi avrebbe assalito dopo il primo sorso. Per cui ritenetevi avvertiti: è la sostanza legale più vicina all'eroina che esista sotto questo aspetto.
All'aspetto si presenta di colore giallo paglierino, limpida e con un cappuccio fine ed abbondante, che però sparisce subito.
Al naso presenta tenui aromi di miele di acacia e di erbaceo e, ovviamente, tanto limone.
In bocca ritroviamo l'erbaceo ed il limone, con il miele ancora meno percettibile. L'amaro è moderato e con la persistenza giusta per chiamare il sorso successivo.



What I should be ashamed of is my passion for the Glückauf Radler, of course.
Radler is a cocktail obtained by mixing beer (helles, pils etc) and lemonade in equal parts. It was born in 1922, when 13.000 cyclists visited Franz Xaver Kugler's tavern, that seeing his stock of beer decreasing at an alarming rate, decided to mix the two ingredients. With time it became overly popular, due to its thirst quenching properties. It can also be prepared with soda pop, but I find this version to be not as thirst quenching as the one prepared with lemonade.
As with every drug, its approach is guileful. As a fan of craft beers, I was prejudiced about such a beverage. The idea of trying it was far from my mind, and that's the reason why the first dose was given to me as a gift by my pusher, that was well aware of the kind of addiction Radler can cause. Be warned, this is the legal substance closest to heroin, under the addiction aspect.
Appearance. Straw yellow color, crystal clear, head is very thick, but dissipates quickly.
Aroma. Faint herbal and honey note and, of course, a lot of lemon.
Flavour. Lemon and herbal with honey even more in the background. Moderate bittereness, persistent enough to call for another gulp.



Lo Starlite non ha bisogno di grosse presentazioni. E' il piccolo della Star Family di casa Yoyofactory, e la combinazione vincente di prestazioni elevate e prezzo abbordabilissimo, hanno contribuito a renderlo molto popolare. Rispetto ai due fratelli maggiori, ovviamente, paga sia sotto il profilo delle prestazioni, che sono inferiori sia in termini di stabilità che di sleeping, che sotto quello del look. Parliamoci chiaro. Il giallino delle plastiche fosforescenti è veramente brutto. Una volta "caricato" alla luce, però, le cose cambiano, visto che lo Starlite è perfettamente visibile anche con condizioni di luce precarie (o nulle) senza bisogno di ricorrere alla lampada di Wood. In definitiva si tratta di un ottimo plasticone, stabile e veloce, unresponsive out of the box, decisamente consigliato come secondo acquisto se il budget è limitato.



Starlite does not require many words to be presented. It's the baby of Yoyofactory's Star family, and the winning combination of high performance and low price made it a crowd favorite. Compared to its bigger brothers, it's a bit less performing, in terms of stability, sleep times and also looks. Let's face it, GITD plastics are ugly, and the Starlite is no exception. Once charged, on the other hand, things change. Starlite's glow make it perfectly visible even under the worst possible light without having to rely on a Wood's lamp. Bottom line is that this is a good plastic yoyo, stable and fast, that plays unresponsive out of the box, making it the perfect "second throw" on a limited budget.



Perché li ho abbinati. Molto semplicemente perché nessuno dei due potrà sostituire la vostra birra e il vosto alluminio (o titanio) preferito, ma entrambi possono essere un piacevole e rinfrescante diversivo, qualcosa da godervi in compagnia in tutta leggerezza.



Why I paired them. Quite simply, because none of the two will replace your favourite beer/ale and aluminum (or titanium), but both can be a pleasant and refreshing diversion, something to be enjoyed in good company.

Il primo abbinamento che vi propongo è tra la Grooving Hop del Birrificio Toccalmatto e il nuovo yoyo in titanio di Casa Oxigène, il Ti2011 (e quello che andrò a scrivere farà da base alla sua prossima recensione).
Un primo parallelo è possibile proprio tra i due marchi, visto che entrambi si posizionano nella fascia alta di mercato.



The first pairing I'm going to suggest you is between Grooving Hop from Birrificio Toccalmatto, and the latest titanium yoyo from Oxygène, the Ti2011. Both brands placed themsevles in the high-end market, so this is a good starting point.




La Grooving Hop è una birra stagionale, prodotta nel periodo estivo, di difficile collocazione stilistica. La mancanza di una consolidata tradizione birraria in Italia, da un lato, penalizza i nostri prodotti sul mercato interno, poco disposto a pagare una birra quanto un buon vino, ma permette una libertà estrema ai birrai, che possono muoversi al di fuori di obblighi e aspettative legate ad uno stile storico che ha caratteristiche ben definite. Trattandosi di una birra stagionale, i birrai di Toccalmatto si divertono a modificarla leggermente di anno in anno, per cui le note qui sotto sono suscettibili a variazioni (inoltre la sto facendo "a memoria", non una situazione ideale).
Come stile di riferimento viene iscritta nella famiglia delle Golden Ale. All'esame visivo si presenta con un bel colore dorato carico, leggermente velata, con un capuccio di schiuma fine e abbondante, ma poco persistente.
Al naso emergono prepotenti gli aromi conferiti dai luppoli utilizzati, tra cui spicca, anche se in misura minore rispetto a versioni precedenti, il Nelson Sauvin, una pregiata varietà da aroma neozelandese. Gli aromi sono di frutta, tra cui spiccano l'uvaspina e il kiwi e, più indietro pesca e agrumi. L'esame gustativo ci restitusce le stesse senzazioni che avevamo riscontrato al naso con l'aggiunta di una piccola nota maltata e di un finale in cui domina il citrico della frutta. Corpo leggero, il citato finale citrico, l'ottima persistenza e presenza dell'amaro e la bassa gradazione alcolica (4,3°) ne fanno una birra estremamente beverina, al limite dell'evaporazione, per la velocità con cui si vuota il bicchiere.






Grooving Hop is a seasonal beer, brewed for the summertime, hard to fit in a particolar style. The style used ad starting point is the Golden Ale one, but the lack of a solid brewing tradition in Italy, in fact, allows for a lot of freedom when it comes to define a recipe. The brewers are free to work outside the limitations and expectations of an historical style. Since it’s a seasonal beer, Toccalmatto’s brewers have a little fun by changing the recipe a bit every year, so keep this in mind when tasting this beer. Appeareance. Nice golden color, slightly hazed, abundant, but fast fading head. Aroma. Great hoppy nose, with Nelson Sauvin clearly recognizable. Fruity aroma: gooseberry, kiwi, a faint peach and citrus fruits. Flavour/Mouthfeel. Same fruity sensations as the nose, with the backing of faint malty note, and a slightly more citrusy feeling. Light body, said citusy final, nice and persistent hop bitterness and light alchool content, are all elements that makes for an easy drinking ale.



All'esame visivo il Ti2011 si presenta con uno splendido grigio a specchio, lucidato alla perfezione. L'esame olfattivo è neutro, mentre il gustativo è abbastanza doloroso a causa della durezza del titanio.
Ultimamente sto privilegiando yoyo di dimensioni generose e, nonostante il mio amore per gli undersized non sia venuto meno, il fatto che le dimensioni del Ti02011 siano molto vicine a quelle del Sovereign, mi ha causato un minimo di apprensione: vista la cifra investita temevo di avere preso un mezzo doppione dello yoyo di casa OneDrop. I miei timori sono stati fugati al primo lancio. Già in mano mi ha trasmesso l'illusione di un player più grande, ma una volta lanciato la sensazione è ullteriormente aumentata, facendomi dimenticare in fretta che stavo giocando uno yoyo largo "solo" 38 mm e spiccioli.
Merito sicuramente di uno shape azzeccato per proporzioni e funzionalità.
Il Ti2011 ha, a mio avviso, tutti i pregi dell'Ozone, ovvero una stabilità "giapponese" e tempi di spin ragguardevoli, uniti ad una maggiore velocità ed agilità e a una presenza sulla corda nettamente inferiore. Ma la cosa che mi ha stupito di più, però, è un’altra. Ho un rapporto orribile con i sistemi di risposta stock. Tutti, indifferentemente, visto che mi fanno pagare a caro prezzo il mio gioco non esattamente pulito. Per cominciare ad apprezzare l’3vo ho dovuto siliconarlo, così come per sfruttare appieno l’Ozone, ma anche i miei OneDrop, CLYW etc. Con il Ti2011 niente. L'ho testato con tutti i trick che sapevo mi avrebbero creato problemi nelle fasi di controrotazione, ma lui se ne è fregato ampiamente, rifiutandosi di spiaccicarsi sulle mie nocche (che ringraziano sentitamente).
Inoltre, a differenza dell'Ozone, riesce a trasmettermi quella sensazione di morbidezza che era tipica degli Oxy con asse in titanio.



Oxygène Ti2011.

Appearance: nice polished gray. Neutral aroma. Quite painful in the mouth: titanium is quite hard.

As of lately, I’ve been favoring bigger throws, and despite my love for undersized is still here, the fact that Ti2011’s specs are quite close to Sovereign’s was cause for a bit of apprehension: given the amount of money involved, I did not want to end up with something too similar to another yoyo in my collection. The first throw was enough to put an end to my fears. While sitting in my hand the Ti2011 already seems bigger than it really is. Once thown, this illusion is even more convincing, and it makes me immediately forget that I’m playing with a yoyo that is “only” 38 mm wide. The shape is to credit for this, since it’s functional and well proportioned. The Ti2011 has all of the Ozone worths and that means “japanese-like”stability and considerable spin times, while adding some of its own, being more fast, agile and lighter on the string. But the thing that struck me most is another. I have a very bad relationship with stock response systems. Each and every one of them gives me trouble form my not quite perfect style of play. I had to silicone my Oxy 3vo to appreciate it, same as the Ozone, but, as I said, this is not limited to Oxygène, that goes with every brand, from CLYW to OneDrop, you name it. Ti2011? Nothing. I threw at it every single trick I knew would give me trouble while in their counter-rotation passages. But no, the Ozone was able to withstand them all, refusing to crash on my knuckels (that are very grateful). Unlike the Ozone, the TI2011 also retains that tipycal Oxy feeling that previous models are famous for.



Il perchè dell'abbinamento. La Grooving Hop, come ho detto è una birra leggera e saporita, ed ogni sorso chiama immediatamente il successivo. Allo stesso modo, il Ti2011 è uno yoyo deliziosamente floaty, che si gioca con estrema facilità. Una volta lanciato è difficile fermarsi, tanto è fresco, rilassante e piacevole nel gioco.



Why I made this pairing. Grooving Hop, as I said, is a light and flavory ale, and every sip immediately calls for another. In the same way the Ti2011 is a deliciously floaty yoyo, very easy to play with. Once thrown is very hard to put it down, for it is so fresh, relaxing and pleasant to play.
